High-Capacity Pump Packages Driving a Sustainable Water Future
THE KEY ROLE OF HIGH-CAPACITY PUMPS IN MOVING WATER THROUGH LONG-DISTANCE PIPELINES
Municipal water transmission projects play a critical role in securing reliable and sustainable water supplies for rapidly growing urban and industrial centers. As populations expand and climate variability increases, pressure on available resources, and the ability to transport water from remote sources—often across long distances and varying elevations—has become a cornerstone of modern infrastructure.
Within the water conveyance systems, pumps are a fundamental enabling technology. While pipelines provide the physical pathway, pumping equipment supplies the energy required to move large volumes of water over extended distances and to overcome elevation differences and friction losses within the network. In long-distance transmission schemes, high-capacity pump packages ensure consistent flow and pressure, allowing utilities to maintain system reliability even under fluctuating demand conditions.
THE TRILLIUM ADVANTAGE, DEMONSTRATED – CUSTOM ENGINEERED PUMP SOLUTIONS AND THROUGH-LIFE SUPPORT
Through its European legacy brands, Termomeccanica Pompe and Gabbioneta Pumps, Trillium brings more than a century of engineering expertise to global municipal water projects, delivering high-capacity engineered pump packages tailored to specific project requirements.
US Municipality Project
This capability was recently demonstrated in a major US municipal water transmission project, where Trillium secured 2 of the 3 pump packages, for a total of 7 pump units, in a highly competitive environment.
The project in question is a 100-mile-long, 72-inch diameter pipeline expansion, including new pumping stations, designed to increase the raw water system capacity from 80 million gallons per day (MGD) to 110 MGD to sustain water supply through 2060, serving a current population of approximately 1.4 million people.
Trillium’s Solution
Trillium supports customers right from the early stages of a project. This one was no different: the team worked closely with the project engineering firm over several years to define the optimized, high-efficiency high-capacity pumping solutions that would ensure reliable operation across the wide flow range demanded by the large-scale, long-distance pipeline operation.

Each horizontal split-case pump package consists of:
- A high-capacity pump 2 variants, one (23,194 US GPM, the other 20,833 US GPM)
- A 3,750 HP, 900 RPM motor equipped with a VFD
- A packing seal
A new rotor, optimized with the use of CFD tools, was specifically developed to enhance the pump hydraulic performances, maximizing efficiency for several operating conditions spacing a wide range of flowrates, and maintaining a low head rise to shutoff.
A final complete unit testing under real operating conditions will conclude the supply to ensure performance is fully validated prior to on-site installation, thereby reducing project risk and commissioning time. As specified in the project requirements, the testing will be conducted at a US-based third-party lab, supported by Trillium’s expert team. Trillium also offers in-house flexible and comprehensive testing solutions (model, scale, and full-size tests).
